Approach My Soul

approach, my soul, the mercy-seat
where Jesus answers prayer
there humbly fall before His feet
for none can perish there

Thy promise is my only plea
with this i venture nigh
Thou callest burdened souls to Thee
and such, o Lord, am i!

o wondrous love - to bleed and die!
to bear the cross and shame!
that guilty sinners such as i
might plead Thy gracious Name

bowed down beneath a load of sin
by satan sorely pressed
by wars without and fears within
i come to Thee for rest

be Thou my shield and hiding place
that, sheltered near Thy side,
i may my fierce accuser face
and tell him Thou hast died!

o wondrous love - to bleed and die!
to bear the cross and shame!
that guilty sinners such as i
might plead Thy gracious Name

1) i love that we are approaching the mercy-seat - where the high priest poured blood out to atone for the sins of israel once a year - in the holy of holies. we can only do this because Christ's death ripped the curtain off, signaling that we are welcome there now. God's wrath is no longer a danger to us, because our redemption has been accomplished. we are paid for.
2) i love that we approach resting only on His promise - His word! THAT is the only plea we have.
3) the honesty of "Thou callest burdened souls to Thee, and such, o Lord, am i!" is refreshing
4) "sorely pressed by wars without and fears within" - gee, describe my heart, why don't you?
5) "i may my fierce accuser face and tell him Thou hast died!" - we are set, ladies and gents, if we are in Christ. satan has to shut up in the face of that truth, and we can have confidence!
