this story is not surprising at all, but people are acting like it's demonstrating that Gov. Perry spoke out of turn. i LOVE the USA and, like Perry, think "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that? But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."
the point is not "Peace out, America - we're ready to leave!" - it never was. the point is "If things pass the point of no return, we can secede. And we very well may."
but we aren't there yet, and hopefully we never will be. i really do love this great country of ours, and one of my favorite things about us is that we are a nation that holds the federal government at bay to some degree simply because we CAN object to the point of pulling out - hello, American Revolution! but our union is great, and while there is much that needs to be redeemed and set right and redirected, i'm proud to be an American.
a bunch of rambling thoughts, many of which relate to hymns and songs, theology and books, movies and tv, food and fashion, politics and the drama that is my life, but nothing really makes a consistent appearance except pictures.

Agree. If our the Federal government continues its current insane rush to consolidate power over the private sector, it is conceivable that Texas could be driven to secede. It's possible, though unlikely...
Where were you whackos when the government was COMPLETELY out of control for the last 8 years??? Here's to hoping those ridiculous secession comments choke morons like Texas off the federal teat. Gosh, thanks for giving reason a try. I mean it's been what, an HOUR now??? Although, I'd love to see the less self-sufficient stripped of their subsidies and watch them topple under their own weight, without the benefit of MY frickin' tax dollars. Go for it, Texas... bu-bye, now.
um, ok.
...the point is not "Peace out, America - we're ready to leave!" - it never was. the point is "If things pass the point of no return, we can secede.
Actually, Lauren, Texas can't secede. No state can secede. This has been decided. It's a shame that any member of the "party of Lincoln" should have to be told this.
really? prove it, please? i'm pretty sure texas retained some fancy pants rights that none of the other states have when we joined the union way back in the day...
The joint resolution annexing Texas allowed it to split five ways. It was a little trick the slave power put in the wording in order to be able to create more slave states if they needed to counter the growing free states. It's a moot point. Texas today is too full of itself and the Lone Star myth to ever subdivide.
Secession is another issue -- also mooted by the events of 1861-65, which left 600,000 Americans dead. ("Party of Lincoln," Lauren. Party of Lincoln.)
ok, i did some research. it looks like you are right about the right of texas to secede, since we didn't come in via treaty like rick perry claimed.
that said, i think there is a lot to be said for the fact that the annexation subjected us only to the US constitution - and that if we drift far enough away from it, we have the right to secede. heck, the entire premise of the founding of our great country is that the bonds that connect us can be dissolved! if things get too ridiculous, "cut and run" is a viable option. and at heart, i think that's what perry was talking about. even if he did get his facts wrong.
oh, and i think there is something to be said for the fact that we were an independent nation. having studied constitutional law a bit, i have to say that that might be a helpful factor.
i am proud to be of the party of Lincoln. thanks for keeping me in check. :)
(ps - why are you anonymous? who are you?)
"...the entire premise of the founding of our great country is that the bonds that connect us can be dissolved!"
Um, no, that's not the founding premise. And if that's what Perry meant...well, I hope it wasn't what he meant. Over and out.
"The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." A.L.
