Another Hymn or Two

O Love Incomprehensible
o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

what pain, what soul-oppressing pain the great Redeemer bore
while bloody sweat like drops of rain distilled from every pore

o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

arraigned at pilate's shameful bar - unparalleled disgrace
see spotless innocence appear in guilts detested place

o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

the spotless Savior lived for me, and died upon the mount
the obedience of His life and death is placed to my account

o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

'tis finished!' now aloud He cries - no more the law requires
and now - amazing sacrifice - the Lord of life expires

o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

on Thee alone my hope relies, beneath Thy cross i fall
my Lord, my life, my sacrifice, my Savior and my all!

o love incomprehensible that made Thee bleed for me
the Judge of all has suffered death to set His prisoner free

1) how amazing, that Christ would suffer excruciatingly for us - His prisoners and natural enemies!
2) "no more the law requires" - "it is finished" means that there is nothing for us to do to accomplish our salvation. there is nothing that Jesus has to do. all is done. we are SAFE.
3) because of 2), that last verse is true: "on Thee alone my hope relies". it is the accomplished work of Christ that saves us, and that alone.
on that note...

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
let us love and sing and wonder, let us praise the Savior's Name
He has hushed the law's loud thunder, He has quenched mount sinai's flame
He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood, He has brought us nigh to God

let us love the Lord Who bought us, pitied us when enemies,
called us by His grace and taught us, gave us ears and gave us eyes
He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood, He has washed us with His blood, He presents our souls to God

let us sing though fierce temptation threaten hard to bear us down
for the Lord, our strong salvation, holds in view the conquer'rs crown
He Who washed us with His blood, He Who washed us with His blood, He Who washed us with His blood, soon will bring us home to God

let us wonder - grace and justice join and point to mercy's store
when through grace in Christ our trust is, justice smiles and asks no more
He Who washed us with His blood, He Who washed us with His blood, He Who washed us with His blood, has secured our way to God

let us praise and join the chorus of the saints enthroned on high
here they trusted Him before us, now their praises fill the sky
'Thou hast washed us with Thy blood, Thou hast washed us with Thy blood, Thou hast washed us with Thy blood, Thou art worthy, Lamb of God'

1) just think about the RICHNESS of these lines: "He has hushed the law's loud thunder, He has quenched mt sinai's flame." mt sinai, of course, is the place where God gave moses the law. that means that being "heartily sorry" for our sins does not mean fearing the condemnation of the law. that in itself will take me years longer to process, i'm sure.
2) He gave us ears and gave us eyes, the two primary senses used in apprehending the Gospel. talk about providing an end AND a means.
3) i love this epithet for Christ - "our strong salvation"
4) one of the greatest not-inspired explanations of the Gospel, to be sure (pithy, but still reflective of the truth): "when through grace in Christ our trust is, justice smiles and asks no more."
5) the last verse has the fabulously encouraging theme of many of the psalms - that past generations of believers have seen the faithfulness of the Lord, in life and, here, in death ("now their praises fill the sky")
